Human Computer Interaction Certificate Students
|
These students are currently working on
their certificates in Human Computer Interaction
at Iowa State University. Through online distance learning, students who are
working in business and industry are able to take courses to learn more about
HCI without having to travel to the ISU campus or committing to a full
graduate program. The certificate can be earned in one to two years.

Debra Clifford
Bio: Debra lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she works for Sandia National Laboratories as a project lead for environment, safety, and health application development. Debra decided to pursue a graduate program in HCI to complement her education in technical communications and computer science. Iowa State University’s graduate program in HCI drew Debra’s attention because it is a completely online program and provides a wide-range of interdisciplinary coursework.

Regis Fauquet
Bio: Regis lives in Orange County, California. He is currently employed at Novell as a Linux Support Engineer, providing L2 technical support for four major accounts.
He chose the HCI Graduate Certificate Program because it provides a strong path into the field of HCI while offering opportunities to further study at the Master degree level and beyond.
Among all the programs offered at different institutions, Regis found the HCI program at ISU offers many courses beyond what is traditionally included in Computer Science related programs.
Regis has a broad academic and professional background in Design, Architecture, Human Factors and Computer Science. His goal is to combine his design skills and his computer skills to produce effective UI designs with the next generation of application software. With the advent of smart devices like phones and tablets, computer systems have become more ubiquitous and human computer interaction is no longer confined to a desktop experience. With ambient computer systems coming of age new challenges arise, and the need to be more careful and thoughtful in the design of user interfaces for safety, security, performance, and business reasons among other things is increasingly evident.
Regis will be leveraging the knowledge and skills gained with the Certificate program to transition his career from a support role to a design role.

Kelly Kalvelage
Bio: Kelly Kalvelage lives in Des Moines where she works part-time as a registered interior designer for an architecture firm. She has earned a BFA in Interior Design from Iowa State and is currently working towards a Masters of Architecture at ISU. Her research interests include human movement and interaction with spaces to idealize design amendments, room usage and space sequence to predict congestive problems and design effective improvements enabling clear communication of all issues and recommended solutions. Human Computer Interaction program will allow her to begin to study the human interaction tendencies and functions on a small scale to understand the design of spaces on a large scale.

Joshua King
Bio: Joshua earned is BA in MIS and Economics from the University of Northern Iowa in 1995. He lives in Littleton, Colorado and works for SpatialInfo as a Senior Developer. He is interested in HCI so he can expand on what he already knows about UX and take his development skills to the next level. He is interested in learning new technologies and advancing his technology knowledge and skills.

Sean Kraus
Bio: Sean is a software engineer at Pelco (Schneider Electric) in Clovis, CA. His interest in HCI started in a graduate course at CSU, Fresno that gave an overview of the field. Yet he did not pursue that interest; instead he started working. Luckily he ended up on the UI team working on the software closest to the user. He collaborated frequently with the user experience team while implementing UIs, which kept his interest in HCI alive. Eventually he decided to pursue his interest and look for a distance program for HCI, because all local educational resources had been exhausted.

Henry Navarro
Bio: Henry is a software professional based in the San Francisco Bay Area and is currently enrolled in the Graduate Certificate Program in HCI, with the expected completion of late 2012. He has many years of experience in software development, focused on user interfaces. He has the unique combination of programming proficiency, aesthetic sense and user experience awareness, enabling him to approach work from multiple perspectives. With the program he hopes to gain formal knowledge and training that will enhance his current qualifications, as well as to connect with others in pursuit of similar interests. One of his main interests is in mobile software interfaces, for the specific challenges they present.

Thomas Parham
Bio: Thomas is an Iowa native, raised just up the road from Ames in the small town of Nevada. He is currently a graduate student at Iowa State pursuing a PhD in Geological and Atmospheric Sciences. His research focuses on geoscience education, particularly the development and evaluation of technology-driven resources for inquiry-based teaching in large lecture format classes, lab sections, and online courses. His dissertation involves the development and critical evaluation of a Virtual Volcano platform in multiple learning contexts. While the complex dynamics of geoscientific phenomena and processes make interactive computer simulations very appealing, the geoscience education community has not yet established a best-practices framework for developing and incorporating these powerful resources. By participating in the HCI program, he hopes to gain a richer understanding of how the human factor can (and should) affect the development of simulations and other computer-based teaching resources from inception to dissemination.
